Olympic Family Hotels Assure You a Comfortable Stay in Beijing

By Naveen Marasinghe

The 2008 Summer Olympics known in official jargon as the Olympics of the XXIX Olympiad will be worked off in the historic Chinese city of Beijing during the month of August. The city of Beijing expects about 500,000 foreign visitors to the city in lieu of the Olympics. However, the city is only geared to handle up to 350,000 foreign tourists at once, therefore an obvious issue of accommodation for tourists' crops up. As a remedy for this situation the Chinese authorities have earmarked hotels and lodges that conform to the necessary standards of hospitality and service as "Official Olympic Family Hotels."

According to this plan Beijing will be able to accommodate up to 600,000 tourists, hotels within close proximity of the main Olympic stadium -the Bird's Nest will automatically be approved as Official Family Hotels while other modes of accommodation such as home stay and bed & breakfast will also be used to increase the number of rooms that are available. Though a relatively new concept in the Chinese travel and tourism sector, Chinese authorities are going ahead with their plan to approve suitable properties that can offer comfortable accommodation for visitors to the Beijing Olympics.

The Chinese themselves are extremely enthusiastic about this new home stay concept and have gone to great lengths to ensure that their homes are in tiptop shape, they say that it is an excellent opportunity to bond with other nationalities. While their guest can also experience home cooked Chinese cuisine, forge treasured friendships and get an in depth look at the lifestyle of an average Chinese family which has long remained an enigma to Westerners.

Apart from these unorthodox forms of accommodation many a Beijing hotel has also been approved as an "Official Olympic Family Hotel". The daily rates at these hotels range from 50 to 80 US dollars a day. Among them is the historic Raffles Hotel, Beijing which is a Beijing luxury hotel that has been at the forefront of the city's hospitality industry since the 1900's.

Ski Holidays in Slovenia - Top 5 Low Budget Resorts for Beginners

Young people enjoying in winter activities
© Photographer: Simonkr | Agency: Dreamstime.com

By Gabriela Rupp

Skiing is a great sport for all ages. If you are new to the slopes, you may be looking for recommendations for good ski resorts you'll enjoy. This guide will help you choose the best Slovenian ski holidays and resorts for people new to the sport. If you're budget-conscious, you may want to take a look at the Slovenian ski resorts too... they are very affordable.

While skiing has never been a cheap sport, by the time you have bought your clothing, booked your vacation and rented the equipment you require, added all those extras like insurance, skiing lessons and a lift pass, you may feel you need to take out a loan. You may be asking yourself if it is really worth it.

Hold tight to your ski poles... even with a low budget you can enjoy nice ski holidays if you're willing to do a bit of shopping around for bargains, make an effort to eat frugally while you're there, and can make your own travel reservations when needed.

Andorra has always been the most inexpensive place to ski in Europe... but not anymore. Since it joined the European Union, prices have soared. At the same time, this duty-free principality has spent over £112 million over the past few years to build new lifts and make itself a four- or five-star vacation destination. Someone has to pay this bill... and it is the tourists.

If you're a skier looking for a less expensive ski option this season, check out Slovenia. It is one of the top destinations in eastern Europe. One could say, that Slovenia has got a corner on the budget holiday market. The ski resorts are establishing themselves as major destinations in the budget ski vacation market with their excellent skiing, modern amenities and beautiful scenery. These resorts are in particular suitable for beginning skiers, and they charge very reasonable prices.

Whether you're traveling with family or by yourself, this is a place you won't want to miss. Slovenia offers terrific slopes for beginners and those looking for something different than they normally ski. It has something for everyone! The ski resorts are few, but fantastic. Some ski slopes face beautiful pristine lakes, others offer incredible mountain scenery. Courses are varied enough to be safe for beginners, yet challenging enough for intermediate skiers. You'll find Slovenia's resorts to be quiet and relaxing as well, unlike some of the other more well-known resorts around Europe.

Slovenia's most famous resorts are Kranjska Gora and Maribor Pohorje, the site of several international races. Since these slopes are not as high in altitude as some of the neighboring resorts in the Alps, if you want to be assured of adequate cover you may want to wait to see before booking your reservations. While this may seem a bit of a hassle, remember, this makes the slopes easier to reach. The lower center of Kranjska Gora is around 800 meters (approximately 2624 feet).

Slovenia's highest ski resort is Mount Kanin... touching the sky at 2,000 meters (approximately 6561 feet). It is covered in snow until the spring. The Kanin Ski Center is close to both Austria and Italy, so tourists vacationing here can pick up a seven-day pass that allows them to ski for free for two days at the Austrian ski resort of Arnoldstein and the Italian resorts of Sella Nevea and Tarvisio.

One of the most modern ski resorts in Slovenia is the Cerkno Ski Center - my favorite slovenian ski spot. Situated at 1,300 meters (approximately 4265 feet), it has modern snowmaking equipment and the only covered chairlifts in Slovenia. It is also the best equipped slovenian ski resort for families. The Cerkno Ski Center guarantees snow for 70 days every season. It is close to the towns of Gorenjska and Primorska.

Bohinj has a private lake with ski slopes above it. The resort of Vogel, which can only be reached by cable-car, is the biggest and most sophisticated in Slovenia.

That was my Top 5 slovenia ski holidays recommendation for you. Are you looking for excellent downhill skiing? Then let me mention also Krvavec, a slovenian ski resort near Ljubljana, which occupies a meadow on the Kalška range.

See you skiing in Slovenia!

Flowering plants include Frangipani. and Bougainvillea.

While there are a healthy variety of birds inhabiting the islands, there are fewer varieties of land based animals. Common to the islands are flying foxes, geckos and garden lizards. There are also a couple of species of snake (not dangerous).

Eco Hotels and Lodges Around The World

By Percy Bonnie

The Hotel world is changing and for the first time it finds itself in the impossible position of having to provide comfort and luxury whilst also satisfying the discerning eco-aware customer.

You see it had to happen eventually, recent studies suggest that the classic hotel is regarded as a kingdom of wastage where the average visitor abandons its well-crafted ecological habits in favour of a careless "I paid for this" attitude. The average guest would check-in to a hotel and immediately forget to turn lights off when not needed or would leave the tap running or even the TV on when not in the room, all things that at home seemed to be more obvious.

As time has gone by, it seems that the onus has fallen onto the hotels themselves to teach and be more in tune with the environment so that in time the guest attitude would change.

Whilst this is true of the inner city industry, in the same timeframe the world has seen an explosion of eco lodges and hotels carefully placed in the most ecologically interesting places on the planet from mountains to jungles and in these a new breed of traveller is enjoying the beauty of nature in the knowledge that their stay is not impacting on it.

Of course all this still comes at a price, we know that often in order to get to the unspoiled beauty of some of these accommodations we have to take some long and very ecologically unfriendly flights so it really is imperative to have a good carbon offset company that you can trust and that runs projects you agree with. More often than not these are organised in less fortunate countries so the flip side is that you will be doing something socially positive too.

There is an incredible socially and ecologically facet to travel now that is improving the world and causing people to understand the effects of their old ways of doing things. we have become much more efficient and this is reflecting on the way we book our holidays too. A few years ago the social and ecological statement of a hotel was inexistent, very few understood the value of environmental protection and even fewer clients cared about it anyway. The tables seem to have turned and in around 30% of travelers these responsibility statements are crucial in their choice of accommodation.

Of course with this new-found interest a whole selection of lists and online guides have appeared to try and show the interested public where these new hotspots of eco-entrepreneurship are located.

Bangkok Hotels By Budget

Bangkok At Night
© Photographer: Duckingforks | Agency: Dreamstime.com

Above: Bangkok at Night!

By Monice Dulcinea

Going to Bangkok? Feeling overwhelmed with hotel choices? Well, don't be.

Here are some great Bangkok hotels we recommend based on your budget:

1. 8,000-9,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- THE ORIENTAL HOTEL - One of the world's premier hotels. The oldest hotel in Bangkok on the bank of Chao Phraya River. Nice colonial-style architecture. Not in the city center though.

2. 7,000-8,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- THE PENINSULA BANGKOK HOTEL - High reviews, world awards. On the bank of the Chao Phraya River, but on the farther island. Free hotel's shuttle boat service takes you to BTS skytrain.

- SUKOTHAI HOTEL - Beautiful contemporary Thai architecture in beautiful landscaped garden. A bit far from shopping areas but worth the beauty.

- FOUR SEASONS HOTEL BANGKOK - Right in front of BTS skytrain. The name guarantees the luxury. Close to most shopping malls.

3. 6,000-7,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- GRAND HYATT ERAWAN - Stunning garden spa. Very close to BTS skytrain. High-end shopping right below the hotel and just across the street.

- THE BANYAN TREE BANGKOK - One of the newest hotels in Bangkok. The tallest hotel building in Bangkok. Exceptional spa and massage.

4. 5,000-6,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- SHERATON GRANDE SUKUMVIT - Beautiful Thai/Bali style swimming pool garden with soothing underwater music. Right at BTS skytrain.

- SHANGRI-LA HOTEL - On the bank of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River. Nice pool, nice view. But don't try the hotel's Angelini Italian restaurant though.

5. 4,000-5,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- CONRAD HOTEL BANGKOK - Contemporary hotel for modern lifestyle. A bit of walking to do to get to BTS skytrain. Traffic is always horrible right in front of the hotel.

- PLAZA ATHENEE HOTEL - Nice and close to BTS skytrain. But the hotel's name might cause pronunciation problem between you and local taxi driver. Bring the hotel's business card and the road name in Thai with you.

6. 3,000-4,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- MARRIOTT RESORT AND SPA - Right on the bank of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River. Very much like a secluded and relaxing resort. Not in the city center, but free shuttle boat to BTS station makes it all fine.

- NAI LERT PARK, RAFFLES INTERNATIONAL HOTEL - Lush garden with peaceful atmosphere. Within walking distance from BTS skytrain and shopping malls.

- TRIPLE TWO SILOM HOTEL - Nice boutique hotel with contemporary Asian design. At night, enjoy Silom Road's street market.

7. 2,000-3,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- PATUMWAN PRINCESS HOTEL - Great location, but always under renovation. Right inside MBK Shopping Center. Try the hotel's Japanese+Korean buffet lunch at Konju restaurant, only $25/person.

- SOFITEL SILOM - Cozy boutique hotel in Bangkok. Few steps off the night market on Silom road. Near BTS skytrain.

8. 1,000-2,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- BUDDY LODGE KHAO SAN ROAD - Nice hotel in the world-famous Khao San Road area. Good for backpacker with more budget. Ask for a quiet room. Khao San could get noisy at night.

9. 500-1,000 BAHT A NIGHT

- ROYAL RIVER HOTEL - On the bank of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River. Quite difficult to get into the city. Big room for small price. You also get free breakfast buffet.

At the time of this writing, US$1 = 40 Thai Baht.

There areas are convenient for Underground access and other transport links, and handy for visiting a large number of tourist attractions. During the week, these hotels offer sizable discounts, while those in Euston, the City, and Bloomsbury are a great bargain on weekends. Victoria offers plenty of budget accommodation and many budget hotel chains operate in Central London.

If you're travelling with your family, an apartment could be an economical option - you can even cook your own food, and save money on expenses.
