Booking A Hotel Room As A Single Person

Vacancy
© Photographer: Meg380 | Agency: Dreamstime.com

By Victor Epand

Did you know that last year alone, 20% of All holiday makers in the United Kingdom travelled alone? The market for individual holiday makers and travellers is now a very significant part of the travel industry, although often when you look about for good deals for single travellers you would be forgiven for thinking that the reverse was true.

Indeed, it is often the case that people going on holiday alone are penalised for their decision or circumstances, and end up having to pay supplements that leave their bill very little short of what it would have been had they gone on holiday with someone else. It is true, of course, that if 20% of holiday makers are travelling on their own, this means that the vast majority, 80%, are those travelling either as a couple or as a family or other group. Clearly hotels and other holiday accommodation need to cater for the majority of their customers, and so most hotel rooms are equipped with double beds.

A single individual booking a hotel room which has a double bed is effectively taking up two potential spaces that the hotel could have filled, and this could be considered as losing the hotel money. At busy times of the year it is highly probable that by letting a room out to someone staying on their own, they are losing a paying customer, since it is likely that they could just as easily have let the room out to a couple who would each have paid for the room. It isn't just the room costs of course. The hotel will take into consideration that a couple are far more likely to buy drinks at the bar, eat in the restaurant and generally spend much more money than the individual. This represents a considerable loss, and so by charging a supplement for the individual traveller, they recoup at least part of this loss and make the blow a little less painful.

Despite this seeming to be a terribly unfair way of doing business, at the end of the day, it is exactly that - a business. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking that hotels are purely there for our holidaying pleasure. They're there to make money, end of story.

Of course, it is less painful for the hotel if a single traveller is using a double room, but not occupying this at the loss of a couple, since many rooms are vacant, and other customers won't have to be turned away. In this way, choosing to stay at a time of year that is less popular for couples, such as holiday seasons, or special events, will decrease the chance, or at least the cost, of any such individual supplement.

If a hotel insists on charging you this extra fee, then look into the idea of getting something in return - possible a free upgrade, or breakfast thrown in? If they refuse to meet you part way on this, then it may be worth looking around and finding a hotel which is more amenable. It may well be that the hotel decides at that point that one paying guest is at least something, and offers you something in return.

Hotels - Backpacking In Canada

By David Collins

Every year, thousands of us load up our backpacks and set off on our own little adventures across vast landscapes and bustling city environments.

When we think of backpacking, the first countries that usually spring to mind are Australia and New Zealand. Indeed, many do choose to head to the Southern Hemisphere - mostly because of the climate, and in some cases the surf.

However, have you ever thought about backpacking through destinations in the northern hemisphere? If you're looking to get away and explore vast wildernesses dotted with hostels and lively cities along the way, then Canada should be somewhere you consider.

Many who backpack around North America normally try to include a trip north of the border as part of their backpacking experience. With a style of life similar to the USA and a mix of British and French cultural traditions there's something for everyone.

Whether you're looking to visit vibrant cities which have bustling nightlife or to experience the beauty of the scenery - including the world famous Niagara Falls - then it's worth considering a stopover in Canada as part of your trip.

There are a wide variety of cheap hotels in Canada to choose from, and a number of companies around the country that can help you find cheap and cheerful hostel accommodation during your journey.

SameSun are an example of such a group, with a range of hostels available across Canada - from Vancouver to Banff National Park - which offer a warm place to stay, great food, laundry facilities as well as internet access. Coupled with a friendly environment in which to meet others and share your backpacking experiences - one such establishment is the Beaver Lounge at their Vancouver hostel.

With a lot of open wilderness north of the main cities, Canada is a fantastic destination if you're looking to hike, bike or just generally experience nature.

Many hotels and hostels will be close to such trails - with some offering excursions for a small fee. So you're more than likely going to find some kind of trail or track - surrounded by beautiful scenery - that's just begging to be explored, either on foot or by bike.

It's advisable to bear climate in mind when planning trips to Canada, for whilst summers can be warm and sunny, winters can be harsh - with some areas becoming completely cut off in heavy snow. But don't let that thought put you off, as many of the hostels have facilities available should the weather turn a little unpredictable.

There are a number of ski resorts dotted around the Rocky Mountain region, which attracts thousands of winter sports enthusiasts every year. For those looking for an adrenaline rush during their backpacking excursions, there are a wide range of activities available all over the country - from sled dog runs to white water rafting.

So if you're stuck for a location for your next backpacking excursion, consider heading north for a change.

Looking to go backpacking in Canada and looking for hotels? Compare a wide range of cheap hotels and hotels in Canada to help plan your perfect trip.

This resort also got the most popular pool for preschoolers. The pool features a pyramid with a waterfall trickling down the pyramid. Since this is such a great pool, we made up a category for this pool. So, the Disney Resort pool with the best view is Disney's Polynesian Resort. This fun pool features a huge erupting volcano and beach entry. There is also a separate water jet area for the little ones to play. Just feet away from this pool is the sandy beach that overlooks the Seven Seas Lagoon and Magic Kingdom. You can see Cinderella's Castle right from the pool. This is a great pool to enjoy in the evening. You can relax at the pool and watch the Electrical Water Pageant and Wishes Fireworks!

Vacation Planning Tips - 10 Hotel Travel Tips

Hotel sign
© Photographer: Annedave | Agency: Dreamstime.com

By Terrie Bryan

Staying in a hotel is great. Who doesn't love the luxury of knowing you can make a mess and someone else will clean it up, make your bed, pick up your towels, etc. Great fun! Here are 10 vacation planning and hotel travel tips to make the most of your next hotel visit.

1. When choosing your hotel, be sure to check how far away it is from such places as the beach, shops, and the areas you plan to explore. Sometimes you will find misleading phrases such as "near the beach" or "within walking distance of shops and restaurants."

2. I like to pick a hotel that has a nice restaurant attached or as part of the hotel itself. They are usually open pretty early and stay open fairly late so that if you happen to get in late from your day, you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat. The ones that are open 24 hours are the best! If you are staying at one of the hotel resorts in Vegas, all the big ones have a 24-hour restaurant. I love that!

3. Go online and check for reviews of the hotel you plan to stay at. Make sure there are not a great number of negative reviews or unhappy customers. Also check travel guidebooks and see if there is a rating.

4. If you know someone who has visited the same place, ask them what hotel they stayed at and see what they recommend. Personal recommendations are always great.

5. Make your reservations early so that you can get all the amenities you desire such as a room with a view, a non-smoking room, and the size and number of beds you need.

6. If you are going to need a rollaway bed, check on this in advance, as there are usually a limited number available. If possible, try to get a room that has a sleeper sofa instead.

7. Saving money is nice but let's face it, the higher quality hotel, the higher the price normally. The better hotels have better construction, and thereby not so much noise or interruptions during the night, allowing for a good night's sleep. But even the high-priced hotels have deals and specials, and you can also get better rates during the off season.

8. Avoid rooms near the noisiest areas such as right by the elevators, the ice machine, or the swimming pool.

9. If you have a pillow that you can't sleep without, don't forget to bring it. If you are flying, you can use it as a travel pillow and just take it onto the plane with you as carry-on. I personally always travel with my Tempurpedic pillow.

10. The first thing I would do when arriving at the hotel is to fold up the comforter or bedspread that is on the bed and put it in a corner somewhere, then call down for extra blankets. The reason? The sheets are laundered daily but the bedspreads are not.

Use these vacation planning tips to make your next hotel stay much more enjoyable.

A Door Closes On Time

By Johnny Summerton

The Old Cataract hotel in Aswan is one of those magical names that conjures up all sorts of romantic images of a gentler, more genteel, bygone era.

Of course such sentiments may no longer be either politically correct or justifiable, but the hotel certainly has a reputation built on its heyday of the first three decades of the last century. And that's still what most visitors are looking for.

It's the sort of place whose behaviour, if it were a person, would probably be best summed up as someone who combines jumping to attention with a nonchalant shrug.

Yes it's full of contradictions. Its setting is incomparable. As its name suggests the hotel sits on the bank of the Nile where the water once crashed against the natural rapids of the river's granite bottom.

But far from fast flowing, since the construction of the High Dam, the Nile at this point is now often a tethered beast with the gentlest of currents. Moreover the imposing sunsets and the uninterrupted views towards Elephantine island have been marred somewhat by the tower block construction of the New Cataract hotel built in 1961, with all the prevailing aesthetic values of the time.

The hotel strives to retain some of its past British colonial trappings, which of course are now clichés. Royal tea is served to order at the appointed hour on a terrace reserved for the hotel's "residents" or guests. Breakfast is "obligatory" - a quaint way of saying that it's included in the price - and there's a smart/smart-casual dress code for dinner in the "1902 restaurant".

Hither and thither throughout the grounds are brass plaques reminding residents that appropriate attire should be worn at all times and a more detailed read of the "rules and regulations" reveals that this means open-toed sandals may only be worn around the pool and jeans are frowned upon in the evenings.

But once again the hotel proves itself to be at odds with its polite and proper intentions. In reality it is neither as staid nor as formal as it purports to be and indeed the atmosphere is more relaxed than at first appears.

In all honesty the old lady is probably in need of something of a facelift. The hotel combines the elegance and architecture of the Victorian age, from which after all it originates, with Moorish-inspired interior decor, whose muted colours are gentle on the eye.

The rooms are high-ceilinged and therefore voluminous and while not exactly luxurious they are far from being spartan. Maybe they're a little on the old-fashioned side - outdated even - but clean and comfortable and comforting without being pretentious.

The air-conditioning is a touch geriatric and along with the plumbing clanks and clonks a fair bit of the time, but that could also be interpreted as part of the hotel's charm.

Most disappointing perhaps is the food and the restaurant which needlessly turns people away after they have gone to the trouble of togging themselves up for the evening. Surely the front desk could have advised guests of the necessity to reserve a table. And the service throughout the hotel is also a little haphazard.

But this could all be down to the fact that there's currently a dip in staff motivation - and that might be putting it mildly.

For here's the rub. From summer of this year the Old Cataract will be closed for business. It's due for a complete renovation, which should take about two years and the chances are that the current leaseholder - the hotel is owned by the state - the French chain Sofitel, will not have its tenancy renewed.

So that's all left the hotel's future rather up in the air. Perhaps the fact that it's the Egyptian authorities that will have the last say in what happens, means that the building's illustrious past will be an equally important element of its future.

After all it's hard to imagine that the memories of Agatha Christie, a young Winston Churchill, Howard Carter or Aga Khan III to name just a few of the host of names to have graced the carpeted floors of the Old Catararct, will be brushed aside by a Las Vegas style glitz 'n glamour makeover.

Oh yes and one saving grace for future residents whenever it reopens its doors - the eyesore that is the New Cataract Hotel is due for demolition.

Thailand On a Budget

By Leigh Burke

Thailand is an amazing place with so much to see and do. Fortunately, the majority of activities in Thailand are either very cheap or free. You will want to maximise your holiday investment by ensuring you stay in a good quality, affordable and sensibly priced hotel.

If it is your first time visiting Thailand, it can be quite daunting to consider amongst the multitude of accommodation options. You have basic hotels and guest rooms starting from as little as $5 a day. Bangkok has thousands of hotels, and you will want to make sure you thoroughly check out all the options before committing any of your hard earned money into a booking that may not be what you want.

Things to consider when booking a hotel in Bangkok, or any of the other destinations in Thailand:

1. The location of the hotel. Is the hotel in a decent location? Is it near other hotels and attractions? Is it near restaurants, and transport? Check where the hotel is on a map.

2. How many stars is the hotel? While not always 100% accurate, this is a good way to gauge the quality of the hotel.

3. Can you get access to ratings and comments from other guests who have stayed at the hotel? Are all these comments and ratings favorable?

4. Can you view pictures of the hotel and facilities, including photos of the inside of the rooms where you will be staying. Try to see photos of the bathroom, as this is often a good indication of the quality and condition of the other fixtures and fittings in your room and the hotel in general.

5. Does the room have air conditioning? This is critical in the warmer months, as the humidity and heat in Thailand can be quite high. You will find yourself sweating 5 minutes after you have a shower and get changed. Some rooms are equipped with fans only. While this goes some way to cooling you down, it is really no substitute for air conditioning. If you get to your hotel, and the airconditioning in your room is not working - demand another room.

6. Is breakfast included? While this is not critical, as food in Thailand is quite cheap, it is always nice to know that it is there if you want the option.

7. Payment methods. Does the hotel accept common payment methods like MasterCard, Amex and Visa as well as cash?

That's about it for this article. I hope you enjoy your stay in Thailand

The 5 Best Hotels in Havana, Cuba

Cuban cigar lady
© Photographer: Rgbspace | Agency: Dreamstime.com

By Emma Lelliott

The biggest seller on our site is, without doubt, holidays to Havana. It's no wonder - not only is it the island's capital, it is also alive with culture, history, nightlife and salsa music! You could spend many months in Havana, and not find every intriguing nook, and exciting cranny.

But whether you wanted to stay in the capital for a weekend or a month, there's one thing you cannot do without: accommodation. Lodgings range across all budgets, but there are some wonderful and atmospheric luxury hotels in Havana if you know where to look. Here are the five best hotels in Havana, Cuba:

The Nacional

One of the most famous hotels in Havana, the Nacional has graced the city's skyline since the 1930s. Located within spacious grounds on the seafront, the Havana hotel's rooms offer stunning views across the sea, and over the cityscape. The ambiance isn't quite matched by stays in the hotel itself though, explaining why it's one star short of 5 - the rooms are functional, but not luxurious, the service is sometimes patchy and the food is often disappointingly average. If you can afford it, the Executive Floor is better served - otherwise, the gardens, pool and history more than make up for the slightly disappointing feel of a stay at this Havana hotel.

Saratoga

Deserving each one of its 5 stars, the Saratoga Hotel in Havana boasts breathtaking views of both the port and the skyline, and overlooks other architectural treasures including the majestic opera house. Another one originally built in the 1930s, even in its early days it attracted artists and socialites from around the world. In terms of facilities, to this day it's the paramount in luxury: a magnificent rooftop swimming pool, and splendid rooms - many decorated with tasteful long cushioned window seats ideal for watching street life unfold.

Santa Isabel

Right at the heart of Old Havana, this hotel is the place to be if the old town is to be the focus of your stay. Authentically refurbished from its days as being the palace of Count Santovenia, rooms overlook the Plaza de Armas, the charming colonial square at the centre of the old district, sporting a fountain often filled with tuberoses! Some of the rooms feel a little outdated (squeaky beds and the like) but, if you can afford it, the Santovenia Suite offers a level of luxury that's pretty hard to beat. It's also worth nothing that this Havana hotel's bar offers some of the finest cocktails in the city!

Condes de Villanueva

With only 9 rooms, you'll be lucky to book a room in this charming little family run Havana hotel. With only 8 other sets of guests, you really feel the personal touch: excellent, friendly family service and a sense of history that seems to follow you out the double doors of this converted merchant's house right into the centre of old Havana. Tucked within the former slave's quarters of the building is one of Old Havana's finest cigar shops, making this a solid choice for fans of fine tobacco.

NH Parque Central

Blending the culture and history with modern high standards of service and attention, the 5 Star NH Parque Central hotel is placed within easy reach of Havana's main points of interest. One of the best hotels in Havana (and Cuba!), in terms of comfort and amenities, the NH Parque Central Hotel has it all - huge, comfortable rooms, quality food, an air conditioned lobby and bar/restaurant, and a splendid rooftop pool.

Truth be told, any of these Havana hotels make a fine place to hang your hat, while in Cuba. Whatever your budget and interests, you're never far away from the culture, history and atmosphere of Cuba's unforgettable capital.

My Favorite Hotel

By Lashawn Duruisseau

When we travel around, there are a couple of Hotels that we absolutely love, and would not change it for the world. You see after traveling when we were younger and experiencing horrible beds, stinky rooms, dirty tubs (other people's hair left in them after cleaning,) old and outdated lobbies, and much more, we decided to take a step up after trying to pinch pennies at the expense of our comfort.

Well, my first choice is in Houston, Texas at the Hilton Hotel next to the Toyota center in downtown Houston. Let me give you a descriptive view of this place...

1. You drive up and there are a number of people waiting to assist you.

a. The Valet Parker. This is your only option. You can not park your own car (cool isn't it)

b. The Bellhop. He is there to take your clothes out of the card and wait on you while you check in. Actually, everytime you leave and come back, you don't even have to carry your own shopping bags if you do not want to.

c. Greeter. He greets the family, gets your name, and asks you is there anything like information that you may need while staying in Houston. They will get reservations for you, directions, suggest shopping places, Realtors, anything that they are familiar with, they can find out for you.

2. Now, the inside. Once you walk in through the motion activated turning entrance, you are welcomed by every worker that lays their eyes on you. There is beautiful detail on the ceilings, the restaurant, the registration desk, even the columns and floors are immaculate in detail. Just imagine even the elevators are gold.

3. Now, the room. They are always immaculate. I have never ever complained about anything that was undone in the rooms.

4. Room Service. They will bring you food throughout the night. They are always polite, the call you by your name and will return with just a call from you to pick up their trays. Also, their food is really good. It tastes like someone from Louisiana cooks the food.

5. Checkout. Best of all. There is no check out. The last morning of your stay, you can check out on the television, or simply look at the bill that they will slide under your door first thing in the morning. If you do not have any disputes, simply leave.

By far, I have been to many FINE hotels, and others cost more, with much more expensive decor, but as far as service as a whole, I absolute suggest this hotel if you are in the Houston Area.

by La Shawn Duruisseau

If you enjoyed this article, please look for more from me. I will be discussing the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Disney World's Animal Kingdom Hotel, and the Swan, The Embassy in Los Angeles, the Horseshoe in Shreveport, LA, and the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, CA (Presidents have stayed here)

Melbourne Hotels - The Peaceful And Striking Abodes in Melbourne

Hotels Australia and Oceania

By Alexs Albert

Who hasn't been entrenched by the prominence that Melbourne laps up because of containing several arresting hotels that accommodate all the tourists wishing to peek at the riveting Rialto Towers or the culture-showing Federation Square? Certainly, whenever you look over this city, you get to notice the broad view of the intriguing things that are actually a pride for Australia. Similar to such views are the Melbourne Hotels, which give shelter to you, readily portray all the arresting provisions and turn everything towards the direction of your anticipations.

There are Melbourne hotels including the Windsor or Royce, which due to their sheer brilliance exhibit much more than what anyone can thoughtfully expect from the level of a five star apartment. Occupying the same apparent position, you also have the Park Hyatt and several others, which quite perfectly give you the chance to interpret your views regarding their appearance and a whole lot of primeval arrangements. No matter how much you think of saving most of your money, the final thing that is going to come up is that you will not be able to manage without moving into the Fitness Hall and diving into the faddy swimming pools that five star hotels in Melbourne seemingly captivate you with.

Therefore, no one can stop you from wallowing in the lavish Medina Grand or the enthralling Langham. And in addition to this, no one can prevent you from your choicest Victoria Street, which boggles your fancy through the charming Hybrid Plane, the great bunch of trees that seem to cover the opposite sides of this avenue. Moreover, apart from slobbering over the theme park or restaurant of Crown Towers Hotel, you can slip into the gigantic State Library of Victoria. Seriously, the library in its very posture is a much notable building to observe, very similar to the hotels in Melbourne.

However, if you are not a studious kind of a person and bask in something that reflects the Melbourne city exactly, then our advice is that you must turn your way towards the vivid Chinatown. And it wouldn't be hard to find hotels in this area that are dominated by the commercial bustle of Melbourne. And as soon as the hotels are ready to serve you, you can plan to witness the illustrious Sun Loong that keep diverting all those who are seeking around in Melbourne to come in proximity of its fascinating spots.

And returning back from the sites like the Shrine of Remberance or the peaceful Yarra River, you will be undoubtedly inclined towards sifting through the banquets, message parlors, restaurants, suites as well many other compelling features that Melbourne Hotels list out in front of you. You are totally free to switch from your relaxing time to the time when you can come face to face with the surrounding things drawing you.

Is it the hotels in Melbourne that keep on making you all the more alert? Or is it the question of charming sights that confuse you? Whatever is the matter, your move should be to browse through the http://www.asiarooms.com/australia/melbourne.html that dole out too ready answers.

Feel The British Legacy In 5 Star Hotels London

Hotels London

By Nancy E Eben

Hotel culture was developed approximately in 1830s in London. Perhaps, it was the beginning of the modern hotel culture and the credit goes to London railways. There are various categories of hotels like hotel, country house hotel, small hotel, town house hotel and metro hotel.

Simply 'hotel' tells about a formal accommodation arrangement. 'Country house hotel' refers to an accommodation which provides good grounds or gardens facilities. Why a Bed and Breakfast Inn is Better Than a Hotel

By Lisa Lockheart

Bed & Breakfast Inns are a charming way to explore a certain region or area of the country. Since B&B inns are usually individually owned and operated, seldom are two alike. In Europe and on the East coast of the U.S. you'll find many B&B inns located in historic buildings, while in other parts of the country they are in the form of a ranch in the middle of nature, or a modern townhome just a short trip to the city. Whatever the setting, B&B inns are popular for their hospitable owners and services, and of course their hearty breakfasts. Here are the pros of staying in a B&B versus a hotel or motel during your vacation.

Bed & Breakfast Inn Pros

A friendly, available host - By definition, B&B inns have a host or owner who is happy to greet you and make you feel welcome. They are usually willing to offer suggestions for activities, restaurants, and other items. Since the host is usually a local, they can offer more insights than you may find in tourist literature. In other words, you'll feel like you're staying at someone's luxury home, rather than just another guest at a large hotel.

Distinctive Setting - Your B&B room is likely to be very distinctive, and designed just for you. It is a luxury room created to fit the surroundings, and won't be identical to other rooms at the inn, unlike large chain hotels or motels where all rooms are identical.

More Activities - Your B&B likely provides TVs, private porches, a social room, games, a spa, and other amenities to help you relax and enjoy your stay there. They often supply food during other meals besides breakfast on site as well. If you are out in nature such as in the Northern mountains of Arizona, the Arizona bed and breakfast will provide outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, skiing, and horseback riding. Each B&B inn provides activities unique to the area.

Overall, a bed and breakfast inn has a homey feel to it, and offers a customized vacation for you and your fellow travelers. Through the help of a friendly host, you can acquaint yourself with the local area and have a personalized, relaxing vacation. For your next vacation find a bed and breakfast within your budget, and enjoy the amenities not offered in other lodging facilities. It can be your home away from home!

Bed And Breakfast Scheme in Delhi, India

By Abhishek Arora

Delhi, the capital of India is located on the banks of river Yamuna. From time immemorial, it has had its share of travelers and revelers. Due to recent economic upturn and the growth of the Indian economy, there has been a steady increase in business tourism and therefore there is a dearth of decent accommodation in Delhi.

The Delhi Government estimates a shortage of approximately 30,000 rooms for visitors for the Common Wealth Games 2010, therefore the Union Ministry of Tourism has launched the Bed and Breakfast Scheme. The features of this Bed and breakfast scheme are that the Government requires home owners to provide additional rooms for use as a bed and breakfast accommodation in their private residences. The Delhi Government offers the home owners a grading system depending on the facilities made available. The license to open a Bed and Breakfast is given after police verification and grading is complete. Currently the Bed and Breakfast are graded into Silver and Gold Category. The home owners who are willing to augment their income and provide their extra rooms for tourists can avail of this facility. The tourist stays in the owner's house and learns the customs and culture of the country and therefore takes back with him rich memories and experiences, which cannot be gained from staying in a hotel.

The owner augments his income and gets to meet new people from different culture and background and the tourist gets to experience the lifestyle and culture of other nationalities. This is best suited to families who want to stay and see/explore how other cultures/ nationalities live and to gain an insight into the cultural heritage of that country.
