Stay in a Bed and Breakfast When You Holiday in Britain

It may not seem the first choice if you are visiting Britain for more than a few days but a Bed and Breakfast can be good value for money. Self catering may be an option but then you have to worry about getting in food, cooking and cleaning and if you compare prices, it can be much more economic to stay in a B&B. Hotels are pretty expensive in the City Centres and although the facilities they offer may be superior, do you really want them all?

If the answer to that is not really then consider using a Bed and Breakfast instead. Apart from fitness facilities, indoor swimming pools and in house entertainment, many of the better Bed and Breakfast properties will provide many of the same facilities as a city centre hotel, and sometime to a higher standard. Most British Bed and Breakfast establishments offer good, clean accommodation, your own key so you can come and go as you please and a good breakfast to start your day. Many will also provide an evening meal if you arrange it in advance or give notice of when you would like to have one.

Bed and Breakfasts can be found in every town and most villages throughout the British Isles. They range in size from a single room for letting to a house that has several rooms for hire. Anything over 6 to 8 rooms is strictly speaking classed as a Guest House but the operational functionality of a Guest and a Bed and Breakfast is almost identical. They are family run establishment where the owner lives on the premises and in that sense, usually has more interest in the well being and comfort of their guests than a Hotel that is part of a larger corporation.

Use one or more of the better accommodation websites to find the property that you want. Most will show a wide range of properties in a common format so you can easily compare one with another. Some will have facilities for videos of the Bed and Breakfast and the ability to print out the details. If you are travelling at short notice, use one of the sites that specialise in last minute and late bookings. They operate on the same principal as the airline sites and you can get some very good prices if you are willing to take the chance.

Dont be put off if the bed and breakfast is not graded by the Tourist Board (Visit Britain) or the AA. It is no longer a necessary requirement of a quality property. The various tourist organisations have finally got their act together and agreed a common grading process. Previously Visit Britain and the AA had different meanings to the star ratings and other symbols such as Crowns and Diamonds were used, these have all been scrapped and only stars are valid now, so in theory, you should be able to tell the standard of any bed and breakfast by its star rating. The grades go from one star to five stars and the more stars the more luxurious the property will be. Having said that, these star ratings are very expensive and have to be paid for by the property owner every season. Whilst the grading system does make a lot of sense and is a good guide to the quality of a property, a lot of very fine bed and breakfasts are not bothering with them any more and are saving the expense. There is a growing awareness amongst property owners that with the internet, competent websites can show sufficient photos and videos for visitors to be able to assess the quality of an establishment and not worry about an expensive, and sometimes, arbitrary grading process. The cost of websites of good quality has become well within the reach of Bed and Breakfast owners and is cheaper in the long run than an annual grading visit and fees.

Windsor Still Attracts After 1000 Years

We might imagine that tourism was a nineteenth century invention and that the first people with leisure time to visit the castle and enjoy royal Windsor's riverside and its many restaurants and quality hotels were the Victorians. Just 20 miles from London, the arrival of trains in the Victorian era did indeed lead to a massive boost in regular visitors, but the start of Windsor tourism can be traced back much further than that.

In fact as early as the Late Medieval period, visitors from London and the surrounding counties made their way to Windsor in alarmingly vast numbers. Many would have described themselves as pilgrims, eager to see the holy bones of John Schorn who has apparently 'conjoured the devil into a boot'. Others would have been seeking relief from headaches. It was common knowledge that the hat that had once belonged to King Henry VI would cure anyone who put it on of the worst pains. For a small fee the hat was placed on the heads of the suffering during the 1500s. Others still would come to trade, at the three great fairs held each year beneath the castle walls. The Spring, Summer and Horse (autumn) fairs were the high points of the year and the population of Windsor would swell by up to 10 times during the festivities.

Of course the accommodation back then was a little more spartan than it is today, but on the same spot where the Shakespeare's 'Hart Inn' once stood, a fine hotel (now called 'The Harte and Garter') still stands to this day. Hotels in Windsor have been offering hospitality to travellers since shortly after the castle was built by William the Conqueror following his invasion of Britain in 1066 and continue to provide rest and recuperation after a long day of sightseeing.

There are a great number of fine restaurants and hotels in Windsor these days, notably Sir Christopher Wren's house by the river Wren, the architect of St Paul's Cathedral in London built the house in Windsor as a family home and now several hundred years later the same building offers top accommodation and fine dining in the riverside restaurant. Windsor has come a long way since hats and bones tempted visitors, but throughout time the crowning glory has been the great Castle itself, home to British monarchy for almost a thousand years and one of England's greatest attractions.

Was this the same Austin 7 that was once tied beneath the Bridge of Sighs? The mind boggles. Traffic cones and even a loo seat have adorned the lofty pinnacles of Kings College Chapel. The offending lavatorial trapping necessitated a steeplejack and the traffic cone a scaffold up one side of the immensely tall chapel. No sooner had half the great scaffold gone up, the traffic cone came down secretly and in the dead of night. The college had been well and truly pranked!

The charm of Cambridge lies in the variety of its buildings, open spaces and history and also in the quirkier touches. On entry to Trinity College Great Court a statue of the King sits grandly under its canopy. On closer inspection he holds not a magnificent sword but instead an old chair leg. The Grand Hotel is a contemporary hotel that's right by the Forbidden City. You can venture up to the roof terrace, which overlooks the Forbidden City, for a fantastic view. This is a luxury hotel. While rates vary, plan on spending about 1,800 Yuan ($263 USD when this was written).

Travelling in strange countries is exciting but not having a good sleep at night can spoil the daytime activities. Careful preparation of your accommodation needs is essential to try to minimalise lack of sleep and I suggest a reasonable time is given to this well in advance of your trip.

Scotland is a country in its own right. It is not part of England or Wales although it shares the same island and is part of the United Kingdom. It is a beautiful country with a variable climate and the seasons are well defined. Winters are not nearly as hard as they were 50 years ago and our roads are kept in superb condition during snow and icy conditions.

Much of the bed and breakfast/guest house accommodation is regulated by the Scottish Tourist Board or the alternative name of visitscotland.com. Businesses have to be a member of this national organisation and are charged fees in accordance with business size. Visitscotland send assessors to every property at least once a year to assess the quality of the business. Usually bed and breakfasts have between 1 - 3 guest bedrooms which are part of the family home. Visitors who like to glean local knowledge enjoy such stays as there is often good contact with the owners. Guest houses normally have more than 3 rooms and the owners do not always stay on the premises although most do.

Visitscotland introduced a star rating system a few years ago and this is now being adopted by England and Wales to stop the confusion of stars, crowns, diamonds etc. The rating system works from 1 - 5 stars with 1 being the lower end of the market and 5 being the top end. This also applies to hotels where the inspection system includes kitchen but it does NOT include kitchens in bed and breakfasts or guest houses. All sorts of excuses have been given to me for not inspecting kitchens but I find them implausible as I think the kitchen is important - I would go as far as saying it is more important than the ensuite (a bath or shower room attached to a particular bedroom). It is important visitors know that kitchens are not taken into account when visitscotland make their assessments.

Once you have browsed for and found your choice of accommodation email the business if possible then you will have direct contact with the owner. Many websites do not give much information so this is the time you ask questions. Is the room on a main road? Is there adequate private parking? Are there many stairs? Do you have pets? (for those who do not like domestic pets) What are the breakfast times? Is there a choice for breakfast? (some places have a set breakfast and others only give continental breakfasts) Is there a lounge? How far from the town are you? What is there to do in the evening? The list is really endless but the more you know the more your stay will be enjoyable for you.

Personally I would choose a bed and breakfast or guest house which has a good website and answers many of the questions and is not afraid to have a small video or slideshow to show you what to expect. Nowadays it is easy for a computer illiterate such as myself to make something and many people do appreciate the effort no matter how amateurish it is.

So the choice is down to the traveller. Between 1 - 5 stars, bed and breakfast, guest house or hotel and be aware price does not always mean quality - an error many of us make.

Youth Hostels in Japan

Regulations and membership

It is possible to stay at a youth hostel even if you aren't a member, but it will cost you approximately 600 yen more per night at the privately owned ones (the government run youth hostels charge you the same regardless of whether you are a member or not). At the privately run youth hostels, if you are staying more than 5 days you are better off becoming a member because as a non-member it will cost you 3,600 yen for 6 days. In fact, if you stay for 6 nights as a non-member you automatically receive a member's card. Membership prices vary according to age. If you are over 19 it is 2,500 yen with an annual renewal fee of 2,000 yen. If you are under 19 it is 1,500 yen and an annual renewal fee of 1,000 yen. You must be over 4 years old to use the Youth Hostels. To become a member is fairly easy to do by going to one of the youth hostels prefectural offices. If you are already a member of a youth hostel in your own country you can use that membership. There are 60 locations in Tokyo and 800 in Japan where you can register. When you go there you are required to have a license or something which identifies you such as a health insurance card. Once you become a member it entitles you to receive discounts (usually 10-20%) on train travel, plane fares, museums and other public facilities. You can also get cheap rent-a-car from Orix (10%) or Nissan rent-a-car (5%).

Rooms

Most bunk bed rooms are in western style, but there are some rooms with Tatami Mats. Although youth hostels are gender separated, private rooms can also be made available to families or groups.

Pricing Average pricing for accommodation at a Youth hostel with 2 square meals is about 4,500 yen/day, although pricing varies between 3,000 yen to 5,000 yen per night. If you pay 5,000 yen you can often get a room with a bath.

Rules

When you stay at a youth hostel in Japan you are required to clean your own table and put your sheets on the bed. Although the food is pretty good the prices are comparatively low.

Reservations

You can book a room 90 days in advance by phone. Generally, cancellation fees don't apply if you cancel at least 4-6 days in advance. If you cancel one day prior to your stay it costs 50% of the accommodation fee.

Alternatives to Youth Hostels

In addition to youth hostels, there are youth guest houses which are a grade up from youth hostels which are explained in a separate article. Youth Guest Houses are a great alternative for people who don't want to 'rough it' and for those traveling in groups who are looking for decent accommodation. According to some industry insiders, one reason why youth guest houses have come about is because the number of people using youth hostels dropped in recent years. According to one of the youth guest hostel owners there used to be over 600 youth hostels with over 600,000 members but now there are only about 350 youth hostels with 100,000 members. This drop is possibly due to the poor state of the facilities and comparatively low standard of service.

The Hotel world is changing and for the first time it finds itself in the impossible position of having to provide comfort and luxury whilst also satisfying the discerning eco-aware customer.

You see it had to happen eventually, recent studies suggest that the classic hotel is regarded as a kingdom of wastage where the average visitor abandons its well-crafted ecological habits in favour of a careless "I paid for this" attitude. The average guest would check-in to a hotel and immediately forget to turn lights off when not needed or would leave the tap running or even the TV on when not in the room, all things that at home seemed to be more obvious.

As time has gone by, it seems that the onus has fallen onto the hotels themselves to teach and be more in tune with the environment so that in time the guest attitude would change.

Whilst this is true of the inner city industry, in the same timeframe the world has seen an explosion of eco lodges and hotels carefully placed in the most ecologically interesting places on the planet from mountains to jungles and in these a new breed of traveller is enjoying the beauty of nature in the knowledge that their stay is not impacting on it.

Of course all this still comes at a price, we know that often in order to get to the unspoiled beauty of some of these accommodations we have to take some long and very ecologically unfriendly flights so it really is imperative to have a good carbon offset company that you can trust and that runs projects you agree with. More often than not these are organised in less fortunate countries so the flip side is that you will be doing something socially positive too.

Booking A Hotel Room As A Single Person

Did you know that last year alone, 20% of All holiday makers in the United Kingdom travelled alone? The market for individual holiday makers and travellers is now a very significant part of the travel industry, although often when you look about for good deals for single travellers you would be forgiven for thinking that the reverse was true.

Indeed, it is often the case that people going on holiday alone are penalised for their decision or circumstances, and end up having to pay supplements that leave their bill very little short of what it would have been had they gone on holiday with someone else. It is true, of course, that if 20% of holiday makers are travelling on their own, this means that the vast majority, 80%, are those travelling either as a couple or as a family or other group. Clearly hotels and other holiday accommodation need to cater for the majority of their customers, and so most hotel rooms are equipped with double beds.

A single individual booking a hotel room which has a double bed is effectively taking up two potential spaces that the hotel could have filled, and this could be considered as losing the hotel money. At busy times of the year it is highly probable that by letting a room out to someone staying on their own, they are losing a paying customer, since it is likely that they could just as easily have let the room out to a couple who would each have paid for the room. It isn't just the room costs of course. The hotel will take into consideration that a couple are far more likely to buy drinks at the bar, eat in the restaurant and generally spend much more money than the individual. This represents a considerable loss, and so by charging a supplement for the individual traveller, they recoup at least part of this loss and make the blow a little less painful.

Despite this seeming to be a terribly unfair way of doing business, at the end of the day, it is exactly that - a business. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking that hotels are purely there for our holidaying pleasure. They're there to make money, end of story.

Of course, it is less painful for the hotel if a single traveller is using a double room, but not occupying this at the loss of a couple, since many rooms are vacant, and other customers won't have to be turned away. In this way, choosing to stay at a time of year that is less popular for couples, such as holiday seasons, or special events, will decrease the chance, or at least the cost, of any such individual supplement.

If a hotel insists on charging you this extra fee, then look into the idea of getting something in return - possible a free upgrade, or breakfast thrown in? If they refuse to meet you part way on this, then it may be worth looking around and finding a hotel which is more amenable. It may well be that the hotel decides at that point that one paying guest is at least something, and offers you something in return.

1. When choosing your hotel, be sure to check how far away it is from such places as the beach, shops, and the areas you plan to explore. Sometimes you will find misleading phrases such as "near the beach" or "within walking distance of shops and restaurants."

2. I like to pick a hotel that has a nice restaurant attached or as part of the hotel itself. They are usually open pretty early and stay open fairly late so that if you happen to get in late from your day, you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat. The ones that are open 24 hours are the best! If you are staying at one of the hotel resorts in Vegas, all the big ones have a 24-hour restaurant. I love that!

3. Go online and check for reviews of the hotel you plan to stay at. Make sure there are not a great number of negative reviews or unhappy customers. Also check travel guidebooks and see if there is a rating.

4. If you know someone who has visited the same place, ask them what hotel they stayed at and see what they recommend. Personal recommendations are always great.

5. Make your reservations early so that you can get all the amenities you desire such as a room with a view, a non-smoking room, and the size and number of beds you need.

6. If you are going to need a rollaway bed, check on this in advance, as there are usually a limited number available. If possible, try to get a room that has a sleeper sofa instead.

7. Saving money is nice but let's face it, the higher quality hotel, the higher the price normally. The better hotels have better construction, and thereby not so much noise or interruptions during the night, allowing for a good night's sleep. But even the high-priced hotels have deals and specials, and you can also get better rates during the off season.

8. Avoid rooms near the noisiest areas such as right by the elevators, the ice machine, or the swimming pool.

9. If you have a pillow that you can't sleep without, don't forget to bring it. If you are flying, you can use it as a travel pillow and just take it onto the plane with you as carry-on. I personally always travel with my Tempurpedic pillow.

10. The first thing I would do when arriving at the hotel is to fold up the comforter or bedspread that is on the bed and put it in a corner somewhere, then call down for extra blankets. The reason? The sheets are laundered daily but the bedspreads are not.

The Old Cataract hotel in Aswan is one of those magical names that conjures up all sorts of romantic images of a gentler, more genteel, bygone era.

Of course such sentiments may no longer be either politically correct or justifiable, but the hotel certainly has a reputation built on its heyday of the first three decades of the last century. And that's still what most visitors are looking for.

It's the sort of place whose behaviour, if it were a person, would probably be best summed up as someone who combines jumping to attention with a nonchalant shrug.

Yes it's full of contradictions. Its setting is incomparable. As its name suggests the hotel sits on the bank of the Nile where the water once crashed against the natural rapids of the river's granite bottom.

But far from fast flowing, since the construction of the High Dam, the Nile at this point is now often a tethered beast with the gentlest of currents. Moreover the imposing sunsets and the uninterrupted views towards Elephantine island have been marred somewhat by the tower block construction of the New Cataract hotel built in 1961, with all the prevailing aesthetic values of the time.

The hotel strives to retain some of its past British colonial trappings, which of course are now clichés. Royal tea is served to order at the appointed hour on a terrace reserved for the hotel's "residents" or guests. Breakfast is "obligatory" - a quaint way of saying that it's included in the price - and there's a smart/smart-casual dress code for dinner in the "1902 restaurant".

Hither and thither throughout the grounds are brass plaques reminding residents that appropriate attire should be worn at all times and a more detailed read of the "rules and regulations" reveals that this means open-toed sandals may only be worn around the pool and jeans are frowned upon in the evenings.

But once again the hotel proves itself to be at odds with its polite and proper intentions. In reality it is neither as staid nor as formal as it purports to be and indeed the atmosphere is more relaxed than at first appears.

In all honesty the old lady is probably in need of something of a facelift. The hotel combines the elegance and architecture of the Victorian age, from which after all it originates, with Moorish-inspired interior decor, whose muted colours are gentle on the eye.

The rooms are high-ceilinged and therefore voluminous and while not exactly luxurious they are far from being spartan. Maybe they're a little on the old-fashioned side - outdated even - but clean and comfortable and comforting without being pretentious.

The air-conditioning is a touch geriatric and along with the plumbing clanks and clonks a fair bit of the time, but that could also be interpreted as part of the hotel's charm.

Most disappointing perhaps is the food and the restaurant which needlessly turns people away after they have gone to the trouble of togging themselves up for the evening. Surely the front desk could have advised guests of the necessity to reserve a table. And the service throughout the hotel is also a little haphazard.

But this could all be down to the fact that there's currently a dip in staff motivation - and that might be putting it mildly.

For here's the rub. From summer of this year the Old Cataract will be closed for business. It's due for a complete renovation, which should take about two years and the chances are that the current leaseholder - the hotel is owned by the state - the French chain Sofitel, will not have its tenancy renewed.

So that's all left the hotel's future rather up in the air. Perhaps the fact that it's the Egyptian authorities that will have the last say in what happens, means that the building's illustrious past will be an equally important element of its future.

After all it's hard to imagine that the memories of Agatha Christie, a young Winston Churchill, Howard Carter or Aga Khan III to name just a few of the host of names to have graced the carpeted floors of the Old Catararct, will be brushed aside by a Las Vegas style glitz 'n glamour makeover.

Oh yes and one saving grace for future residents whenever it reopens its doors - the eyesore that is the New Cataract Hotel is due for demolition.

5. Does the room have air conditioning? This is critical in the warmer months, as the humidity and heat in Thailand can be quite high. You will find yourself sweating 5 minutes after you have a shower and get changed. Some rooms are equipped with fans only. While this goes some way to cooling you down, it is really no substitute for air conditioning. If you get to your hotel, and the airconditioning in your room is not working - demand another room.

6. Is breakfast included? While this is not critical, as food in Thailand is quite cheap, it is always nice to know that it is there if you want the option.

7. Payment methods. Does the hotel accept common payment methods like MasterCard, Amex and Visa as well as cash?

My Favorite Hotel

When we travel around, there are a couple of Hotels that we absolutely love, and would not change it for the world. You see after traveling when we were younger and experiencing horrible beds, stinky rooms, dirty tubs (other people's hair left in them after cleaning,) old and outdated lobbies, and much more, we decided to take a step up after trying to pinch pennies at the expense of our comfort.

Well, my first choice is in Houston, Texas at the Hilton Hotel next to the Toyota center in downtown Houston. Let me give you a descriptive view of this place...

1. You drive up and there are a number of people waiting to assist you.

a. The Valet Parker. This is your only option. You can not park your own car (cool isn't it)

b. The Bellhop. He is there to take your clothes out of the card and wait on you while you check in. Actually, everytime you leave and come back, you don't even have to carry your own shopping bags if you do not want to.

c. Greeter. He greets the family, gets your name, and asks you is there anything like information that you may need while staying in Houston. They will get reservations for you, directions, suggest shopping places, Realtors, anything that they are familiar with, they can find out for you.

2. Now, the inside. Once you walk in through the motion activated turning entrance, you are welcomed by every worker that lays their eyes on you. There is beautiful detail on the ceilings, the restaurant, the registration desk, even the columns and floors are immaculate in detail. Just imagine even the elevators are gold.

3. Now, the room. They are always immaculate. I have never ever complained about anything that was undone in the rooms.

4. Room Service. They will bring you food throughout the night. They are always polite, the call you by your name and will return with just a call from you to pick up their trays. Also, their food is really good. It tastes like someone from Louisiana cooks the food.

5. Checkout. Best of all. There is no check out. The last morning of your stay, you can check out on the television, or simply look at the bill that they will slide under your door first thing in the morning. If you do not have any disputes, simply leave.

By far, I have been to many FINE hotels, and others cost more, with much more expensive decor, but as far as service as a whole, I absolute suggest this hotel if you are in the Houston Area.

People that don't stay in hotels very often are generally not concerned about bed bugs - that is, until someone checking in asks a question regarding bed bugs and soon everyone in line waiting to check in is worried that the hotel is infested with bed bugs."

She adds that some hotels like Hilton Hotels, "take preventative measures when cleaning all rooms. The hotel has a deep clean program where once a week, an outsourced company comes in to deep clean all mattresses and furniture. . . hotels would have a higher chance of getting bed bugs if they are not properly changing sheets and cleaning the mattresses after every guest."

Little Blood Sucking Critters

Myth: Bedbugs are invisible. False. When first born, bedbugs are 1mm long, translucent, light in color and are very difficult to find. Progressively, they grow darker and adult bedbugs are reddish brown, oval, non-winged, with several legs and can grow to about 4 to 5 mm - about the size of an apple seed.

Know thine enemy! Bedbugs survive by feeding on the blood of warm-blooded hosts - like you and me. They are attracted by carbon dioxide and blood. Most can live for about 18 months without feeding by usually go looking for a meal every 5 to 10 days, or once a week. The rest of the time, they spend hiding. When they do decide to "eat," they usually come out about an hour before dawn.

France is a country of many faces, with experiences and sights to match every type of traveler's desires. And whether it's good food, its impressively recounted history and culture or its natural beauty, France can easily be enjoyed on a budget.

Cities

Paris, Marseille, Nice or Montpellier - every city offers its own unique visitor attractions. More importantly, most cities are walkable or offer cheap transport, which makes getting between hostels in France relatively hassle-free.

The capital, Paris, is an obvious addition to any backpacking itinerary, whether taking a quick hike up the Eiffel Tower, circling the impressive Arc de Triomphe or taking photos next to the stunning Sacre-Coeur cathedral atop Montmartre Hill, with its fantastic views of the city.

But equally, Nice's Promenade des Anglais and Le Chateau castle, or the historical fashion exhibits at the Musee de la Mode in Marseille are all just as appealing - depending on one's preferences.

There are also plenty of cheap hostels, restaurants and cafes in the cities, as well as comparatively cheap grocery shops offering fresh and varied domestic produce that make visiting on a budget easy for the forward thinking traveler.

Countryside

It may be the lesser-touted tourist destination of France, particularly for backpackers, but its countryside villages and small hamlets endow the country with much of its character. More importantly, it offers some of Europe's most dramatically beautiful scenery.

Travel is, of course, more of an issue for countryside backpacking, and out in the countryside, hostels in France are fewer and further between than in cities. Budget travel, though, is still remarkably simple.

For example, the awesome Ardeche River in the south and the surrounding towns of Ardeche, Lozere and Gard all offer plenty of places to stay, making it an easily accessible sightseeing and adventuring stop.

In fact, kayaking down the 120 kilometer river and stopping at the various towns along the way is a great way to see the natural side of France. The most scenic stretch of the Ardeche Gorges ends with the impressive 60 meter stone arch Pont d'Arc. Guided tours are available, but it is cheaper just to hire your own kayak.

Equally, the Mediterranean-lying cities along the French Riviera, such as the famous Cannes, provide the hardcore water sport enthusiasts scope to partake in a spot of surfing, sailing, windsurfing or snorkeling.

However, these southern destinations are popular with all manner of travelers, both domestic and international, in the high-season, so booking in advance is advised.

But regardless of whether it is the stretching landscape of vineyards interspersed with miniature communities or the cosmopolitan cultural explosions that are France's cities, there is plenty on offer for those with enough time to explore.

Integrated Resorts by definition are resorts with mixed development like hotels, restaurants, convention centre, theme park, shopping centre, casino etc. Because of the gaming component - casino, integrated resorts development has stirred a great controversy among the Singaporeans.

The Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Long announced the cabinet's decision to develop 2 integrated resorts in Marina Bay and Sentosa. The Singapore Government stated that the aim of the Integrated Resorts is to boast the country's tourism industry. There has been very keen competition from the neighboring countries like Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong. According to the Government, the Integrated Resorts are expected to create some 35,000 jobs directly and indirectly.

There has been debate among the Singaporeans on the plan to build Integrated Resorts. Religious groups and social workers voiced their disapproval at the negative social impact of gambling.

The Government however, promised to have a proper and strict safeguard to limit the social impact of gambling, among others exorbitant entrance fee and the casinos would not extend credit to local population.

Marina Bay Sands

It is located at the Marina South of Singapore. Currently, there are a few pretigious hotels operating like Ritz Charlton Millenium, Oriental Hotel, Marina Mandarin and Pan Pacific Hotel. It will have a panoramic view of the sea and tranquil environment.

The Government of Singapore called for request for concept in December 2004. It received overwhelming response from the industry. A total of 19 bids were submitted during the request for concept.

In the formal bids later, 4 companies/consortiums submitted their tender including:- (i) MGM Mirage/Capital Land, (ii) Harrah's Entertainment/ Keppel Land, (iii) Las Vegas Sands and (iv) Genting International/Star Cruises.

Eventually, Las Vegas Sands succeeded in their tender, by committing the highest development investmetn of S$3.85 billion. The concept was designed by Moshe Sofdie consisting of 3 layers shells containing conference halls, 3 hotel towers linked to top floor of a sky garden.

Resorts World at Sentosa

Sentosa which means transquility in Malay is a popular island resort in Singapore. Previously, it was known as Pulau Belakang Mati (Island of Death from Behind). Statistics shows that it has been visited by some 2 million people annually. It has a sheltered beach of more than 2 km in length on the Southern coast, historical Fort Siloso from World War II, two golf courses and 2 5-stars hotels.

The island has an area of 5 square kilometres. 70% of it is covered by secondary rainforest. It is the habitat of monitor lizards, monkeys, peacocks, parrots as well as native flora and fauna.

Since its inception of development in 1972, some S$420 million of private capitals and S$500 million Government fund have been invested to develop the island.

3 consortiums submitted their proposal on 10 October 2006. They are: (i) Kerzner International with Capital Land; (ii) Genting International with Star Cruises Universal Studios and (iii) Eight Wonder with Publishing and Broadcasting Limited, Melco International Development Limited, Isle of Capri Casinos Inc.

The bid were reviewed by a ministerial committee and a tender evaluation committee and results were announced on 8 December 2006. Genting International and Star Cruises won the bid. Genting committed to a development investment of S$3.85 billion.

With these 2 Integrated Resorts completed and in operation by late 2009, Singapore will be placed at a totally better position in tourism industry in the region as compared with its competitors.

You won't find many hotels around the world nowadays that were built at the start of the 20th century but fortunately Hotel Metropol of Moscow, Russia still stands after being constructed in 1907. The style of the architecture of the Hotel Metropol is Art Nouveau and its design was the result of collaboration between three architects named Vladimir Shukhov, Lev Kekushev, and William Walcot and three artists named Nikolai Andreev, Alexander Golovin, Mikhail Vrubel.

Having been brought back to its original function as one of the Moscow hotels, the Hotel Metropol currently offers 362 rooms for occupancy to the public. Each room in the hotel is unique because each has a different shape or special décor that differentiate it from the other 361 rooms inside.

Back in 1898, the lot on which the present Hotel Metropol stands was originally purchased to become the site of a new opera hall. The lot was purchased by Sawa Mamontov (who was eventually taken off the project when he was sentenced to jail due to fraud) and Petersburg Insurance for this purpose. Once Mamontov was removed from the project and jailed, Petersburg Insurance took over management of the project but scrapped plans for the opera hall.

From an architectural perspective, the Hotel Metropol is one rectangular building that was constructed so that it would not require any beams or columns to support its parts. Construction was initiated in 1899 and culminated in 1907. The structural system is based on reinforced concrete.

It is notable that the Hotel Metropol survived the turmoil during the 1917 Russian Revolution and still stands today as one of the historical yet functional Moscow hotels. Once the Bolsheviks were in power after the Russian Revolution, they nationalized Hotel Metropol in 1918 and called it the Second House of Soviets. It no longer functioned as one of the Moscow hotels under the Bolsheviks - rather, the new Soviet bureaucrats used the Hotel Metropol building for both living quarters and office space.

It was only much later (during the 1930s) that the Hotel Metropol building was restored to its previous role as one of the functional Moscow hotels.
When 1986 came around, certain Finnish companies initiated a major restoration of the Hotel Metropol which lasted until 1991. The restoration was an offshoot of bilateral trade between the Soviets and the Finns.

At present, the Hotel Metropol is considered one of the five-star luxury Moscow hotels which has a prized location at the center of the city of Moscow itself. It is also conveniently located right across from the Bolshoi Theater, while the Kremlin and the Red Square sit just three minutes away from the Hotel Metropol if you walk. It serves both European and Russian cuisine in its three in-house restaurants.

From the airport, you require just a 45-minute drive to get to Hotel Metropol. If you disembark at the Leningradsky Railway Station, the Hotel Metropol is just 15 minutes away from that station by car.

The five-star luxury hotel designation of Hotel Metropol is no laughing matter because the hotel has garnered multiple awards from 2001 to 2006, giving recognition to this hotel with the very long history and a reputation to uphold. Among the recognition it has received are the 2002 "International Golden Trophy for Quality" in Paris; the 2003 "17th European Gold Award for Quality" also in Paris; and the 2005 "Golden Europe Award for Quality and Commercial Prestige" in Brussels. These awards are only a fitting reminder that some things in life really do get better as they age.
